The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) was established in 1979 by the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), as a non-profit, private corporation with a mission to continue “commercial, cultural and other relations between the people of the United States and the people on Taiwan” and to assist Taiwan in maintaining its self-defense capability. Since 1979, AIT has played a central role as the United States and Taiwan have built a comprehensive, durable, and mutually beneficial partnership, which they enjoy today.
Taiwan remains a vital and reliable U.S. partner in Asia. Grounded by our mutual respect for open markets, democracy and human rights, strong U.S.-Taiwan relations and stable cross-Strait relations are integral components of regional prosperity and stability. AIT’s efforts are focused on four areas: promoting U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation; promoting the U.S.-Taiwan economic and commercial relationship; promoting Taiwan’s role in the global community; and promoting people-to-people ties.
This exhibition celebrates our shared interests and values, and the role that AIT and its staff have played over the past four decades to foster close economic, security, and people-to-people ties, and to support Taiwan’s engagement in the international community.
